SMILE Vision Correction

"The addition of SMILE to Durrie Vision's offerings gives us more power to customize a treatment plan to fit both the patient's vision and lifestyle." – Dr. Jason Stahl

SMILE Overview

Dedicated to offering the latest advancements in laser vision correction, Durrie Vision is proud to introduce the ReLEx SMILE procedure. SMILE – short for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction – is a minimally invasive procedure designed to correct myopia (nearsightedness). SMILE is the latest technique to join our lineup of laser vision correction solutions, which also includes SBK – Advanced LASIK and ASA – Advanced PRK. Recognizing that everyone’s eyes are unique, our philosophy is to provide a range of safe, effective solutions that enable our surgeons to identify the best procedure and the best treatment technology for each individual. Like SBK, SMILE patients benefit from a rapid visual recovery.

Who is a Candidate for SMILE?

SMILE may be an excellent solution for someone who:

  • Is at least 18 years old
  • Has mild to moderate myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Does not have astigmatism

The degree of the refractive error as well as the thickness and shape of the cornea are all factors that can affect candidacy. During our Advanced Ocular Analysis, you will experience thorough diagnostic testing and meet with a surgeon to determine what procedure is best for you.

What to Expect on the Day of the Procedure

On the day of your procedure, plan to be at the Durrie Vision surgery center for about 90 minutes.

You will need a driver to take you home as your vision may be blurry after the procedure.

Several tests will be repeated before your surgery.  Anesthetic eye drops are used to numb the eye.

Then a small, gentle eyelid holder is placed between your eyelids so you don’t have to worry about blinking during the procedure.

Using the Zeiss VisuMax femtosecond laser, a thin lenticule and small incision are created inside the cornea. The surgeon then removes the lenticule through the incision with minimal disruption to the cornea. Removing the lenticule changes the shape of the cornea, thereby achieving the desired refractive correction.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery

Our post-operative technicians provide instructions regarding type and frequency of eye drops and restrictions. You will be given these instructions as well as eye shields to wear while sleeping the first two nights. SMILE patients typically experience little if any discomfort during or after the procedure.  You can expect your vision to be blurry the first few hours after surgery and then notice rapid and significant improvement in vision.  Studies have indicated most patients were seeing 20/20 or better within four hours after surgery.

The following morning we will see you for a quick one day, post-operative visit with our team of doctors, and review any questions you may have.
