    5 Facts about LASIK

    5 Facts about LASIK

Looking into LASIK? There are a number of myths and misconceptions on LASIK that can make the search a bit overwhelming. At Durrie Vision, our goal is to demystify the process, helping you make a confident, informed decision. To help set the record straight, Dr. Timothy Lindquist, Durrie Vision ophthalmologist and refractive surgeon, shares 5 truths about laser vision correction below.

    1. LASIK does not wear off.

Quick anatomy lesson! The eye has two lenses – the cornea on the front surface and the lens inside. LASIK is a permanent change to the cornea, which addresses nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Natural changes in the internal lens of the eye can affect vision beginning in your 40s. Additional technologies exist to improve vision when those changes occur. Read more about these changes and how they can affect your vision here.

    1. LASIK is a superior treatment for astigmatism.

LASIK doesn’t just neutralize astigmatism; it eliminates it. When astigmatism is present, the cornea has a slightly different surface curvature in one direction or the other. The normal cornea is shaped like a basketball whereas the astigmatic cornea is shaped like a football. Today’s advanced laser technology corrects astigmatism by reshaping the cornea, a permanent change.

    1. Recovery from LASIK is quick.

Worried LASIK will inconvenience your schedule? With the most modern technology, LASIK has a short recovery period. You will need a driver the day of surgery, but the majority of our patients are able to return to work and normal activities as early as the next day.

    1. People as young as 18 can be eligible for LASIK.

While there are varying factors that often drive a person to look into LASIK— age, lifestyle, etc. — people as young as 18 years of age can be considered a candidate. Younger patients also enjoy the greatest cost and lifestyle benefit over time. In fact, the number one comment we hear from patients after surgery is “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”

    1. LASIK is affordable.

Think you can’t afford LASIK? Think again. First, try the online calculator on our Financing & Affordability page to compare the cost associated with a one-time procedure to a lifetime of glasses, contacts and solutions.
